Same pattern exists mostly for my board and USB, Intel did have a win 8 driver but only Asmedia in 10 - its possible the Microsoft driver is the Intel one though. All MS drivers have the wrong dates, they all say they from 2008 which is not possible.
I had the same problem as you once I built my new system. I then went and downloaded the latest ASMedia ASM106x drivers and found there is now an option to turn off 'safely remove'.
It is located in the following location:
- Device Manager
- IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
- Asmedia 106x SATA Controller
Double click on those controllers and select the 'Policies' tab and see if the option is there to deselect 'Enable safely remove disk'.
You might have a different motherboard than me, but if you have the latest drivers install, it could be a possibility that the option is now there and selectable.
I am currently running with a 'Asus Sabertooth z77'
This was the place I downloaded my latest ASMedia drivers from:
ASMEDIA drivers & firmwares
There is also more options to select for different motherboard manufactures that use these ASMedia chips.
Hope this helps some that haven't figured this out yet
I also noticed in my manual that it showed a way to enable/disable hot-swapping on the ASMedia controller from the BIOS. Mine still showed up when I booted into Windows even though I had it disabled in the BIOS.
This fix will allow you to enable/disable right from Windows (*Restart Required) if it is needed in the future for any reason.

The SATA ports on my HP Presario P6214Y motherboard failed. The BIOS would not recognize any of my SATA disks.
(it would sometimes for 1-2 minutes after power up)
I reset the BIOS to default.
I installed an Asmedia Asm106x PCIe controller card and connected my hard drive

The system will now partially boot. The computer attempted an automatic system repair, but system repair was unsuccessful and did not help.
I was able to boot a system recovery CD. I attempted to load the Asmedia drivers but the driver load failed.

I can boot into F8 but safe mode and safe mode with command prompt would not work.
I was able to get into 'Repair Your Computer' Command prompt.
I attempted to load the drivers with RUNDLL32.EXE SETUPAPI.DLL,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 128 .asahci64.inf
I got no indication at all. No errors, no success messages either.

Still same result. Complete boot fails but will boot enough to attempt system repair and F8 works but safe mode won't work.
I'm pretty sure the hard drive is good. I was able to copy off the data to another computer with a SATA to USB device
Any other suggestions on getting it to boot?
Any suggestions on a different SATA card?
